Thoughts on cameras

I’ve been fortunate, definitely fortunate, to own a lot of different cameras that are considered classic, and in some cases very desirable, a few are are …

  • Leica M6, Leica M2, Leica M8
  • Mamiya 7, Mamiya 7 II, Hasselblad 500C/M
  • Rolleiflex 3.5 E, Yashica Mat 124G
  • Fuji GW690W
  • Zeiss Ikon ZM / Voigtlander Bessa R2A, R3A, Voigtlander 667
  • Nikon FM2n, Olympus OM2, Pentax K1000, Pentax ME
  • Canon 5D, 6D, Sony A7, Sony A7 II
  • Fujifilm X100, X100T, XE-1, XE-3, XPro-1, XT2, XT10, XH1
  • Olympus OMD EM5-Mk II, Olympus OMD EM5-Mk III

It all began innocently enough with a Nikon D40. Well, I sold it and used the money to upgrade to a D90, which I eventually sold to fund the purchase of the newly released X100—the hottest camera in the world at the time. With each upgrade, I recycled the initial amount spent and covered the additional cost with my credit card. Fast forward 15 years, and that incremental expenditure has snowballed into a runaway, planet-sized ball of anxiety. There’s a clear pattern here: I’ve never been truly happy with any camera I’ve owned. Chasing the perfect camera is my version of a never-ending quest for the Holy Grail, except instead of eternal glory, I end up with a load of debt and a collection of cameras that never quite hit the mark.

A green Leica M2 – here for no reason

Why?
